A couple of years ago Fenway Sports Group had shown an interest in getting involved with Brazilian football.

A change in the domestic landscape with regards to the Campeonate Brasileiro Serie A, Brazil’s top-tier men’s football competition, had piqued the interest of investors, including a clutch from the United States, with Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor acquiring Botafogo, and Genoa, Standard Liege and Red Star FC owners 777 Partners, who had been in talks over an Everton takeover earlier this year, purchasing Vasco da Gama.

During the past 18 months or so there have been a clutch of Brazilian clubs come under new ownership, including the recent purchase of Bahia by City Football Group, the parent company that owns Manchester City, in May.

The main reason for the renewed interest in the Brazilian domestic market is that it is changing, and the country where the beautiful game is the national sport and receives fervent support in a nation where the population is north of 215 million, there is enormous scope for growth, investors believe, particularly with the revamping of the domestic game.
