What West Ham think of Jesse Lingard in training amid potential free transfer

West Ham United may now offer Jesse Lingard a short-term contract as the free agent is impressing everyone in training at Rush Green during his attempt to earn a transfer.

That is according to Sky Sports, which reports that West Ham giving Lingard a short-term contract cannot be ruled out. Manager David Moyes invited the 30-year-old to train at Rush Green this summer to maintain his fitness. But the midfielder is exciting their coaching staff.

Lingard accepted Moyes’ invite after leaving Nottingham Forest at the end of his contract in June. He spent just one season at the City Ground after leaving Manchester United as a free agent last year. Steve Cooper only fielded the 32-cap England maestro in 20 games all term.

Lingard could now secure a free transfer after impressing West Ham

West Ham had wanted to sign Lingard in a free transfer last summer before he chose to join Nottingham Forest. Moyes targeted his return to London Stadium having excelled through a loan spell from Manchester United in 2021. Lingard offered the Irons nine goals in 16 games.

He further offered the Hammers five assists and started in each of his appearances. Lingard agreed to the move to east London having only played three games for 179 minutes in total under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United that season. Yet he turned down a return.

Moyes would be relying on recapturing Lingard’s form whilst on loan

Moyes did not initially envisage offering Lingard a contract to join West Ham as a free agent in this transfer window when he invited the midfielder to Rush Green simply to train. But an offer may now follow as the Warrington-born playmaker is impressing everyone at the Irons.

West Ham will continue to monitor Lingard’s form in training before deciding on any Bosman transfer. A short-term contract is most likely should they elect to negotiate terms and cannot currently be ruled out. Moyes would be relying on recapturing the form he offered on loan.

Lingard enthralled many with his instant efforts at London Stadium, including Rio Ferdinand. But his decision to turn down a free transfer to West Ham last year in favour of Nottingham Forest backfired. Over his 20 appearances for 1,114 minutes, Lingard scored just two goals.

Ferdinand told Vibe with Five back in March 2021: “He could play in any top team because he’s an intelligent footballer. He can play off one-touch or two-touch. He gets judged on his antics on social media. Some people it rubs them up the wrong way.

“But if you’re looking at him as just a cold footballer, anyone who knows football surely has to see the kid has a talent. Since he’s gone in there, what he’s done is amazing.”
