Sunderland attacker Jewison Bennette will remain at the club until January at the earliest, Tony Mowbray has confirmed in his recent pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s trip to Coventry City.
The Costa Rican starlet has struggled to break into the Black Cats’ first-team ever since moving to the Stadium of Light last summer from Herediano.
Journalist Kevin Jimenez revealed that Bennette was set to go out on loan for the rest of the season in order to collect precious minutes. Jimenez claimed on Monday that Sunderland would decide over the coming days whether to allow the teenager to leave on a temporary basis or not.
That decision has now been made and, according to head coach Tony Mowbray, Bennette will stay at the club past deadline day as the 19-year-old is currently injured.
Speaking to the Northern Echo, Mowbray said [quotes via Football League World]:
“Jewison is injured at the moment, so he won’t be involved at the weekend. I don’t think it’s going to be this window [for a loan move] for Jewison.
The former Celtic manager also admitted that Bennette needs to integrate himself into the team more:
“He needs to keep bedding in, he needs to learn the language, to understand the demands of the club, and hopefully he makes more of a breakthrough because he is undoubtedly talented. We’ve got three, four, five French-speaking players in there, but not many Spanish-speaking players.
“His integration has been more difficult, so we have to be patient with Jewison,” Mowbray continued.
“He’s injured at the moment so I don’t think this week he’ll be going off anywhere or doing anything other than getting himself fit and available for selection again.”

This is unfortunate news for Bennette. A loan move for the season could have been the best option for his career to develop further but he’s picked up an injury at a bad time.
Now, Bennette will be forced to stay at Sunderland and fight for his place but if he can’t break into the first-team, it will be several months wasted with limited opportunities to play football.
