Aston Villa have agreed to sign Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona.

The Midlands club have been searching for back-up to Pau Torres at left-sided centre-back after Tyrone Mings picked up a serious injury in the early weeks of the new season.

Lenglet has been searching for a route out of Barcelona after he was told he wouldn’t be in Xavi’s plans for the campaign ahead.

The defender spent last season on loan with Tottenham in the Premier League but wasn’t signed permanently after a series of struggles in north London.

He’ll now return to England’s top division, however, to provide Unai Emery with more defensive options as he continues his Villa revolution.

Barcelona have been keen to offload Lenglet, with his wages thought to be among the larger burdens on the club’s finances.

Head coach Unai Emery is able to call upon Ezri Konsa, Diego Carlos, Pau Torres and Calum Chambers, but wants more.

Lenglet would also provice European experience, with Aston Villa on the verge of the Europa Conference League group stage following a 5-0 first leg win over Hibernian.

Monchi, Aston Villa’s president of football operations, had signed Lenglet during his time at Sevilla. Lenglet played 73 times for Sevilla before a £32million move to Barcelona in 2018.
