Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the Gers’ 3-0 win against St Mirren on Sunday (8 October, 11:25am), the pundit said he believes the 37-year-old has only emerged as one of the bookies’ favourites because he left DC United on Saturday (7 October).

He continued, “I don’t understand why the Englishman would be in the running when he hasn’t really demonstrated his credentials as a manager.”

Wayne Rooney obviously just got added because he departed DC United last night, according to Boyd. “I don’t understand why he would be in there otherwise.”

Unlikely

Rooney left DC United after the team missed the MLS playoffs, thus it seems improbable that Rangers would ever consider hiring him.

He previously led Derby County well, but he hasn’t really done much as a manager to merit consideration for the Ibrox managerial post.

Even though he was one of the best players of his generation, the Gers need someone with more experience than the former England international.

Similar to Frank Lampard, who was also mentioned as a candidate for the job, that isn’t enough to put them in with a chance of succeeding Michael Beale in the hot seat, though.

There will probably be an appointment made at Ibrox within the next week or two, but it would be very surprising if Rooney ended up filling the position because he doesn’t seem to be the ideal candidate at this time.
