Even some Geordies may have been surprised by how well Lewis Miley handled himself against Chelsea, despite the fact that Newcastle United supporters are well aware of the talent the 17-year-old possesses.

The teenager was the star of the show as Newcastle easily defeated an error-plagued Chelsea team at St. James’ Park on Saturday. The teenager was thrust into Eddie Howe’s starting lineup for the second straight game. The six-foot-six, baby-faced teenager took center stage in the middle of the park, even contributing a brilliant assist to Alexander Isak’s opening goal.

Miley is getting some well-earned playing time in the senior squad because the Magpies are still crippled by injuries. It’s understandable why he was given the opportunity over many older, younger prospects because he always appeared calm and confident when he touched the ball.

Miley faced Enzo Fernandez, one of the most expensive players in world football, for his first Premier League start at St. James’ Park, which only served to highlight his incredible performance. The Newcastle academy product has made a joke out of the Chelsea player’s £107 million price tag for the second time in as many months.

The pass that was inches perfect for Isak’s first goal remained the memorable moment. There must have been a huge temptation to shoot and possibly wheel away in celebration in front of the Leazes End as the ball bounced off Joelinton and fell into the young player’s path.

Rather, Miley raised his head and skillfully passed the ball in between the lines, giving Isak the opportunity to spin and score—something the Swedish striker had hoped for more of throughout the match.

At full time, Miley told NUFC.co.uk, “I was about to shoot before the first goal, but then I spotted Alex just through the middle of the defenders, who thought I was going to shoot, and I managed to play the ball to Alex who scored.”

“When the ball struck the back of the net and we scored, it was an incredible feeling to hear the cheers of the crowd. For me, it was a wonderful moment. Alexander Isak encouraged me to keep going after I passed to him during the celebrations, and it’s great to hear from players who are competing on an international level. It increases my confidence as a player.”

Miley will likely feature at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday evening as Newcastle’s threadbare squad fly out for their final away trip of the Champions League group stage.
