A top-tier team will summon back a player on loan from Charlton Athletic, according to a report.

James Abankwah’s loan to Charlton Athletic is expected to terminate early, according to a report from

Abankwah, a youthful defender, was acquired by Charlton Athletic from Udinese in the summer transfer window. Although he joined from Irish team St. Pat’s, he had primarily played youth football for the Serie A squad and had made two appearances for their first team.

The relocation to The Valley, nevertheless, hasn’t gone as planned. Since September, he has not been included in a League One matchday squad. He started two games at right-back.

Since then, he has actually only made one appearance, which was in the FA Cup first round 1-1 draw against Cray Valley Paper Mills.

Now that the January transfer window is rapidly approaching, the unavoidable has surfaced. The Republic of Ireland youth international is expected to be called up by parent club Udinese following a difficult half-season at Charlton Athletic, according to the Irish Independent.

From there, the talented 19-year-old might be able to secure a loan to a different British team or a team in Serie B.

A fresh step is about to happen?

With St. Pat’s, Abankwah became a highly skilled Irish player, and his well-earned move to Italy with Udinese further demonstrates his potential. But in the end, this time at Charlton Athletic has been difficult, and it’s best for everyone if it ends early in January.

The Addicks will now have less options at right and center back, but considering how little Abankwah played, it remains to be seen if Michael Appleton feels the need to bring in a replacement for the remainder of the campaign.

Should Abankwah go out on loan once more, he will be hoping to find more opportunities at his next club. It will take time to see how things work out for him, but leaving The Valley is undoubtedly in his best interest.
