The New York Yankees announced on Monday that Sean Casey will be their new hitting coach.

Casey, 49, has been an analyst for MLB Network since his retirement from the major leagues in 2008.

“I’m just really excited about having this opportunity in the second half to impact the guys in the lineup,” Casey said, according to a team statement. “The Yankees have a lot of professional hitters, and I’m excited to connect with them and get on the same page with them.” I’ve already spoken with [assistant hitting coaches] Brad Wilkerson and Casey Dykes, and I can’t wait to put their knowledge and abilities to use. In terms of our batters, I believe every

“There’s no way to cookie-cut hitters, and if you do, you get into trouble and underutilize any strengths they may have.” I’m going to get to know each player and their hitting style. One thing I will emphasize is zone control and hunting in the zone. I want them to be in charge of their process and stick to their strategy in order to win every pitch. At the end of the day, we’ll focus on ensuring that each batter has a method that allows him to be the best version of himself.”

Following the team’s 7-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, the Yankees fired hitting coach Dillon Lawson.

Casey, a three-time All-Star who hit.302 in 12 major league seasons, played for the Cincinnati Reds with Yankees manager Aaron Boone from 1998 to 2003. Casey went on to say that “having Aaron Boone in the dugout was a huge factor in me taking this position — with how well I know him and how much respect I have for him as a manager.”

According to Boone, Casey’s “passion for hitting is infectious.”

“For anyone who has ever met him, his ability to inspire is one of his greatest gifts, and I can’t wait to see what he does next.”

The Yankees have a major-league-worst hitting average.Since Aaron Judge tore a ligament in his right big toe on June 3, he has 218 hits in 31 games, going 14-17 and entering the All-Star break in fourth place in the AL East at 49-42.

Lawson’s firing marked New York’s first in-season coaching change since Nardi Contreras took over as pitching coach on Buck Showalter’s staff in July 1995, replacing Billy Connors.
