December 18 (Reuters) – Several important Newcastle United players are still unavailable as manager Eddie Howe attempts to field the best possible team in Tuesday’s League Cup quarter-final against Luton Town.

Howe told reporters on Monday that defender Fabian Schar and midfielder Joelinton, who were hurt during Newcastle’s win over Fulham on Sunday, had scans that did not appear “too bad” but were not a definite.

“To miss Fabby would be a big blow,” he remarked of Schar.

Forward Alexander Isak also missed Sunday’s game due to a groin issue, but it was not significant, according to Howe.

“We need to treat him carefully so he doesn’t miss six or seven weeks.” “He has a chance tomorrow, but we must be cautious,” the English coach stated.

Sven Botman’s comeback after a three-month knee injury was a significant boost for Newcastle.

“There are certain players who, in particular, lift the team, and Sven is one of them.” He instills confidence in the players around him and makes a significant difference,” Howe remarked.

Newcastle United have never won the League Cup, becoming runners-up in 1976 and again last season. Howe, on the other hand, thought their experience getting to Wembley in February would aid them in this campaign.

“We’ve seen the benefits it can provide. The build-up to the final was amazing to be a part of… it was incredible to see how many supporters we brought to London. It has aided us this year,” he stated.

Luton Town  has a better track record in the competition, having won it five times, most recently in 2015. They’ve struggled this season, albeit their home form has improved dramatically since the end of October.

Howe, on the other hand, was sure Newcastle could stop their five-match losing record on the road in all competitions.

“We defeated Manchester United and were seconds away from defeating Paris Saint-Germain.” I have no doubts about our character. “We’re certainly ready to fight,” he declared.
