D.J. Hayden, a former NFL player, was killed in an automobile accident early Saturday morning in Houston.
The Houston Chronicle first reported that Hayden, 33, a cornerback at the University of Houston before being taken in the first round (12th overall) by the Raiders in 2013, was one of six individuals murdered after a motorist ran a red light at 2 a.m. local time.
According to authorities, a black Chrysler 300 ran a red light and collided with a black Acura SUV that had the right of way.
Hayden played four of his eight NFL seasons with the Raiders, as well as stints with Detroit, Jacksonville, and Washington.
“The Raiders family is in mourning following the tragic loss of former cornerback D.J. Hayden,” the Raiders announced in a statement Saturday. “Everyone who knew D.J. will remember him fondly for his courage, perseverance, and dedication to his teammates.” The Raider Nation’s thoughts and prayers are with D.J.’s family at this time.”
