Though there was just one Kansas City Chiefs player that was truly deserving of an honour, the annual NFL Honours red carpet and ceremony took place on Thursday night. Among the 32 club representatives nominated for Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year is quarterback Patrick Mahomes. For prestigious honours like Coach of the Year, Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and others, Kansas City lacked a legitimate finalist.
The stories from the season are reflected in part in the final voting. That is detrimental to the Chiefs, particularly in light of the fact that they had what many would consider a “down year” by their standards. Their turn-around, and hence a more accurate assessment of their worth, didn’t occur until shortly before the postseason.
surely wasn’t a talent issue, as the team boasted a few All-Pros during the regular season and has the best player in the sport under center. It also has perhaps the best head coach in the league. Final voting results clearly aren’t everything, as evidenced by the organization finding success anyway.
Lamar Jackson, the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, was appropriately awarded his second NFL MVP trophy. Tyreek Hill and Christian McCaffrey, two non-quarterbacks, just never had great enough opportunities to play against him throughout the regular season because he was so good. Mahomes received two votes for third, fourth, and fifth place respectively after finishing seventh in points. This was among his poorest performances since he assumed the role of a full-time starter in 2018, which regrettably follows a lacklustre regular season statistics performance.
Mahomes recorded career-low numbers in 16 starts for yards per attempt (7.0), yards per completion (10.4), touchdown percentage (4.5),
success rate (48.2%), and passer rating (92.6). And he turned the football over more times than he had ever turned it over. Mahomes is not entirely to blame for this, as he handled personnel doubts for the majority of the regular
