The Minnesota Gophers’ season opener on Thursday night went smoothly on the field, but off it, former head coach Jerry Kill lost his cool after his New Mexico State Aggies fell short 38-0.
After five seasons with Minnesota, Epilepsy-related complications forced Kill to resign in 2015. Since then, Kill has held a number of positions, most notably that of interim head coach at TCU following Gary Patterson’s firing the previous season. However, many were taken aback when Kill accepted the Aggies’ head coaching position in the fall of last year.

After leaving in 2015, Kill said, “It destroyed us.” “I was reluctant to go out the way I did. I’m coaching now because of this. I want to leave the way I want to, without having anything taken from me. People are free to judge me, but I am aware of my values.

Prior to the game, Kill’s return to Minnesota dominated the headlines because he had declared he would never set foot in the facility now known as Huntington Bank Stadium. When Kill stated he wasn’t sure if he would shake current head coach P.J. Fleck’s hand, he added gasoline to the fire.
