Atlanta Braves key player dies in car crash en route to 9/11 memorial

Varvaro left Major League Baseball in 2016 to work as a police officer in the New York City area.
Currently in the early phases of his second career, he tragically went away at the age of 36.
“The loss of former Braves pitcher Anthony Varvaro saddens us much. The 37-year-old Anthony participated in six major league seasons, four of which he spent with Atlanta, according to the Braves.

“He voluntarily retired from MLB in 2016 to become a Port Authority police officer.”He got into a car accident while traveling to work at the World Trade Center Command as part of the events honoring September 11, 2001.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and colleagues.”
After learning of Varvaro’s passing, Mike Hampton, the coach at St. John’s University, expressed that he was “at a loss for words.” Before becoming pro, Staten Island native Varvaro played for St. John’s.

“Not only was he everything you could want out of a ball player, he was everything you could want in a person,” Hampton stated. “My heart goes out to his family, friends, teammates and fellow officers.”

Varvaro was a big league player from 2010 to 2015. Along with the Braves, he also played for the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners. He appeared in 166 games.

Varvaro was his route to participate in a memorial event at the World Trade Center’s 9/11 memorial. Before his tragic death, he was married to Kerry Thomson in 2011 and they had four children together.
