Patrick Mahomes reacts as Kansas City Chiefs hand out huge contract extension

When Chris Jones, a teammate, inked a new deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes was ecstatic.

Patrick Mahomes is delighted Chris Jones has signed a new contract with the Chiefs

The two-time All-Pro defensive tackle Jones signed a five-year contract worth approximately $160 million (£124.4 million), of which the first two are guaranteed in full. In February, he was instrumental in the Chiefs’ victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

In the NFL regular season, Jones racked up 10.5 sacks. In the Super Bowl, he made an important play in overtime that resulted in a field goal. This gave Mahomes the opportunity to drive the team down the field and toss to Mecole Hardman for a touchdown to seal the victory.

Jones couldn’t hide his joy: “Letssss gooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!” He posted on X after putting pen to paper on the new contract that will make him extremely rich.

Jones was chosen for the Pro Bowl five times and was a prominent player in three Super Bowl victories since the Chiefs drafted him in the 2016 draft. The 29-year-old eventually agreed to a new contract, so he will still play at Arrowhead Stadium.

The contract talks had been going on for a while. Given that he refused to sign a new contract and skipped the season’s first game against the Detroit Lions, it appeared as though Jones’ relationship with the franchise had worsened last summer.

However, he agreed to a one-year contract worth up to $22 million (£17.1 million) if he fulfilled specific incentives a few days later. Just one month after winning the Super Bowl in Las Vegas and receiving heartwarming images from head coach Andy Reid, Jones has signed to a contract that would make him one of the top paid defensive tackles in the NFL.

With $95m (£73.8m) spread across the first three years of the contract, he’s only behind Los Angeles Rams superstar Aaron Donald when it comes to yearly pay. In response to Jones’ new contract, Mahomes simply posted a single smiling emoji on social media.

However, Jones’ crucial role to his team is undeniable. The Chiefs are no longer the explosive offensive team they once were, with Travis Kelce slowly becoming less impactful and Tyreek Hill transferred to the Miami Dolphins.

Jones and the Steve Spagnuola-coordinated defense have stepped up and become among the best in the league as the attack retreats. Leading this bunch from the inside out is Jones, assisted by standout defenders Trent McDuffie and L’Jarius Sneed.

“Letssss gooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!” was Jones’ uncontrollable grin. After signing the new contract that will make him incredibly wealthy, he posted on X.
