Throughout his tenure at Ibrox, Philippe Clement has had to cope with a long series of injuries.

He lamented the players’ lack of preseason training following Sunday’s Scottish Cup victory over Hibernian, making a barely concealed jab at former manager Michael Beale.

He stated he wanted to get both Dujon Sterling and Ross McCausland back for Thursday night’s second leg against Benfica despite losing both players to injuries during the match at Easter Road.

Cantwell has good news as he was observed training with the first team this morning, despite the mixed news on that front.

McCausland and fellow injury concern Scott Wright joined the offensive midfielder in the group.

However, Ryan Jack and Sterling were nowhere to be found, and it seems improbable that they would be there on Thursday. Clement is left with a little bit of space in the middle, despite the fact that the former is obviously quite adaptable.

Following a league victory at McDiarmid Park, Cantwell had a muscular injury that kept him out of action for about three weeks.

In his pre-game press conference this afternoon, Clement will discuss the squad’s fitness, but it is undeniable that Cantwell’s presence in training today represents a significant improvement.

Due to injuries, Abdallah Sima and Danilo are still out for an extended period of time.

At this point, the semifinal match is evenly matched. Tom Lawrence and Sterling scored the goals for the visiting team in Lisbon as the first leg ended 2-2 in Portugal.

Benfica’s survival going into this week’s return leg was guaranteed by an own goal by Connor Goldson and an in question penalty by Angel Di Maris.
