L.J. Cryer led the Houston Cougars men’s basketball team to a great second-half performance against Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship semifinal, despite the loss of top player J’Wan Roberts to injury. With his outstanding 20 points, which included six three-pointers, Cryer helped the Cougars win 82–59.

But when Roberts sustained a shin contusion that kept him out of the game for the rest of it, questions were raised. The squad led by head coach Kelvin Sampson is now competing for an automatic bid into March Madness, which could confirm their standing as the top seed. The club was previously predicted as the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
In an attempt to improve their NCAA tournament standing, the Cougars will play Iowa State in the Big 12 tournament title game. Houston is expected to receive the top seed in the South Region according to ESPN’s Bracketology; their actual seeding will be decided on Selection Sunday.
