Is the best catcher prospect in the New York Yankees ready for Opening Day? Jose Trevino Takes on Austin Wells for the Lead

The Catcher position is the only one that remains unknown with almost the entire lineup established. Despite the fact that rookie Austin Wells’ outstanding Spring Training has produced fierce competition among the players, Jose Trevino is now finally available for selection. And Aaron Boone has a lot of headaches because of that.
Wells was possibly the Yankees’ lone shining spot throughout the previous campaign. That being said, it was anticipated that the Yankees would be forgiving of him when the offseason got underway. Wells is still a rookie, after all, and he needs time to grow. But the attractive man with the moustache had other ideas. Game after game, Wells has been dominating the plate. Nestor Cortes threw seventy-five pitches in the first one. For a pitcher who is prepared to start on opening day, this is a positive development. But Wells is where the true story originated. With a walk, an RBI single, and a double, the slugger finished the game 2-for-2.
Baseball-Reference reports that Wells is hitting.344/.417/.656/1.073 so far this spring. These are amazing numbers for a rookie. However, “Aaron Boone was noncommittal on whether the left-handed hitting Wells will also get that start (on opening day with Cortes),” as Greg Joyce of the New York Post noted.
What makes the captain remain a little dubious about his rookie, then? Jose Trevino’s background and interactions with Nestor Cortes hold the key to the solution. That might end up being the decisive element in this competition for the first-day nod.
To overcome explosiveness with experience for the Yankees?
It is impossible to overstate Trevino’s importance to the Yankees’ club. Other than a 2023 riddled with injuries, he has been the core of this team.
