Javi Gracia, the new manager of Leeds, may not be able to attend the team’s Saturday match against Southampton because he is still awaiting his work permission.

52-year-old Gracia was named Jesse Marsch’s replacement at Leeds on Tuesday, and if the West Yorkshire team is to stay in the Premier League, she must start working right away. Leeds is currently two points from safety in 19th place in the table.

Leeds’ home match against Southampton on Saturday is crucial because the Saints are just one point and one spot behind Leeds in 20th place. Both sides are desperate for a victory at Elland Road, but Southampton will be buoyant following their most recent 1-0 victory over Chelsea.

However, Gracia’s lack of a work permit may compel him to watch Saturday’s game from the stands. In order to take over training, he also needs that paperwork, forcing caretaker manager Michael Skubala and his associates to step in once more.

When this issue will be rectified is unknown. Gracia is not immediately eligible for a work visa under the new regulations that came into effect after Brexit. Before he can begin his new position, the Football Association must give him a governing body endorsement (GBE).

For a foreign manager to be eligible, they must have worked for at least 36 months, or two years in a row, in a “top league” within the previous five years. Gracia, who has only played for 27 months following two distinct stints with Watford and Valencia, does not fit that description.

Gracia’s case will need to go before an exceptions panel, as reported by the Daily Mail, and it might not be resolved for some time. Although a positive outcome is anticipated for the Spaniard’s appeal, Leeds’s relegation struggle makes a protracted postponement unaffordable.

Gracia only has fifteen games left to keep Leeds in the Premier League. At Elland Road, a victory over Southampton on Saturday will raise spirits, but the Saints won’t go down without a fight. Since the World Cup in Qatar, Leeds has not triumphed in a Premier League match.

Leeds cautiously revealed Gracia’s appointment on Tuesday. “Leeds United is delighted to announce the club has agreed terms with Javi Gracia to become men’s first team head, the statement said coach, subject to obtaining a work permit.”
