Steelers' Russell Wilson Addresses Competition Against Kenny Pickett

Russell Wilson, the new quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Freiermuth have already begun to develop a rapport since Pittsburgh sent Kenny Pickett to Philadelphia.

According to Freiermuth this week, “I was just down there in San Diego with him working out and throwing routes,” as reported by Around The 412. He’s done a terrific job striking up conversations and establishing a rapport with people. He’s a really kind man. You can see how motivated and determined he is to succeed, to come to Pittsburgh and help us win some playoff games. I believe he will blend right in with our locker room atmosphere.”

Van Jefferson and Calvin Austin, two wide receivers, were also present at the Southern California session, according to information disclosed by Freiermuth during the interview.

Wilson was cut by the Denver Broncos in March and signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After acquiring Wilson, the Steelers continued to bolster their quarterback room by acquiring Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears. According to head coach Mike Tomlin, Wilson is in a “pole” position to start at quarterback in 2024.

The 25-year-old Freiermuth just finished a 2023 season marred by injuries. Having just nine game starts under his belt, he had 32 catches for 308 yards and two scores. The 2021 draft’s second-round selection is aware that He has a contract with the 2024 season. Along with Wilson, he will collaborate with Arthur Smith, the new offensive coordinator.

As Freiermuth prepares for his fourth season, the tight end revealed that he would like to remain in Pittsburgh for the foreseeable future.

“I want to be in Pittsburgh for the rest of my career,” Freiermuth said. “Hopefully, it shakes out that way. I want to continue to play for Pittsburgh because it reminds me of where I’m from and how I was raised. Growing up and going through the hard times and good times together. I feel like the Pittsburgh media and fanbase and everyone kind of does that together. I feel very at peace and very comfortable in Pittsburgh.”
