Douglas Luiz will serve a suspension following his tenth yellow card of the year, which he received during Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Brentford, dealing a serious blow to Aston Villa ahead of their matchup with Arsenal.

Players who receive 10 bookings in their club’s first 32 games are subject to a two-match ban under Premier League regulations. Luiz will thus also be absent from the April 21 encounter against Bournemouth.

In what was basically the final play of the game, the vital midfield player—who is a candidate for Villa’s player of the year—was booked for a foul on Mathias Jorgensen in the seventh minute of extra time against Brentford.

If he had waited a few more seconds to prevent a booking, even if  it would have been Villa’s 33rd league game of the season, he would not have been suspended if he had got his tenth yellow card of the year against Arsenal.

When Luiz received five bookings before of Villa’s 19th league game of the season in December, he was already suspended for one match due to yellow card accumulation. In his previous four Premier League games, he has received three yellow cards, according to Birmingham Live.

Luiz, who has ten goals and 10 assists this season, will be a huge loss for Unai Emery’s Villa, who, despite having played two more games, are presently only three points above of fifth-place Tottenham. Should Tottenham defeat Nottingham Forest tomorrow, Villa will relegated to fifth position.

Villa’s status in Europe’s elite club tournament might still be guaranteed with a top-five finish, as the Premier League may be in line for an extra Champions League slot. Luiz’s one-game ban served during the away game at Brentford before to Christmas is the only game he has missed this season.

After defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 on Saturday night, Arsenal took back the top spot in the Premier League. However, if Liverpool defeats Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, they may take back the top place.
