Although the Yankees kept assistant hitting coaches Casey Dykes and Brad Wilkerson, no one has been designated as his immediate replacement.

In GM Brian Cashman’s 25-year tenure, this is the first time the Yankees have sacked a coach in the middle of the season.

“It has been well documented that I have been reluctant in the past to make changes to our coaching staff in the middle of a season,” Cashman stated in a statement. “I firmly think that both achievements and setbacks are the result of teamwork.

“However, I ultimately felt that a change was needed and that a new voice overseeing our hitting operations would give us the best chance to perform closer to our capabilities as we move forward into the second half of our season.”

The 38-year-old Lawson was appointed hitting coach before the 2022 campaign. The Yankees outhit the Cubs 11-6, but fell 7-4 to finish the first half eight games behind the Rays, who lead the AL East. This led to his firing.

The Yankees’ run average going into Sunday was 4.40, which was less than the league average. Due to an injured right big toe, superstar Aaron Judge has been out of the lineup since June 4 and his comeback date is unknown.
