The excellent WNBA Draft class is led by the record-breaking Caitlin Clark.
The Iowa guard and likely first overall pick Caitlin Clark, 22, leads a strong class of players in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Draft on Monday as she prepares for the next stage of her career.
Few shocks are anticipated, as Clark is almost certain to join an injured Indiana Fever after shattering Pete Maravich’s 54-year-old record for most NCAA points scored this season and becoming a household name in the US.
Hall of Famer and ESPN pundit Rebecca Lobo told reporters this week, “I’m eager to see players around (Clark) who can consistently see what she sees and finish what she delivers to them.”
“There will be challenges, but at the same time, the talent around her is also going to be better.”
If everything proceeds as planned, Aliyah Boston, the undisputed Rookie of the Year from the previous year, and Clark will work together to try to turn around the Fever, who haven’t had a winning season since 2015.
With an embarrassing array of options at the Brooklyn event, the Los Angeles Sparks will have two selections in the top five, at number two and number four.
Cameron Brink of Stanford may provide the struggling Sparks club, who finished the regular season with a poor 17-23 record, exceptional shot-blocking skills.
Another intriguing choice is six-foot seven-inch Brazilian center Kamilla Cardoso, who finished her career at South Carolina averaging 14.4 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game.
The third and fifth picks, respectively, go to the Dallas Wings and Chicago Sky.
One of Sparks General Manager Raegan Pebley’s main objectives for the next season is to develop youthful talent.
“It’s my job to be a good steward over these picks,” she informed reporters.
“I anticipate that we’re going to have a training camp that’s going to be really competitive.”
At the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Monday night, you should also keep an eye out for Tennessee’s Rickea Jackson, LSU’s dynamic leader Angel Reese, and Connecticut forward Aaliyah Edwards.
