As the Wolverines gear up for the 2024 season aiming to retain their national title, they face the challenge without Harbaugh at the helm, who has been succeeded by offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore. Additionally, star quarterback J.J. McCarthy will be absent, having entered the 2024 NFL Draft after leading Michigan to glory.

Though he now plays for the Chargers, Harbaugh still has a strong bond with Michigan, where he excelled as a player and coach before being selected 26th overall by the Chicago Bears in the 1987 draft. After almost ten years away, Harbaugh secured his NFL head coaching return earlier this year. His previous stint ended in 2014 with the San Francisco 49ers.

“My affection for Michigan endures since I played there and returned to coach there. I’ll be a devoted Wolverine for eternity,” Harbaugh declared in a release. “I’m remarkably fortunate to have been afforded the privilege of coaching at places where life’s journey has created strong personal connections for me.”

“From my time as my father, Jack,’s assistant coach at Western Kentucky, to my time as every opportunity he had, from working as an assistant with the Raiders to heading the programs at USD, Stanford, the 49ers, and Michigan, seemed significant and intimate.”

“The Spanos family was the most kind and welcoming to me during my time as a Chargers player. Returning here feels like coming home, and it’s wonderful that those sentiments haven’t altered.”
