Sad News: ATP Has Suspended Holger Rune

There have been plenty of shocks in the 2024 tennis season. The tennis world has been watching some off-court developments, even if the court has seen the most of the activity. One such instance that happened recently startled everyone, even the tennis umpire. Holger Rune was participating in his BMW Open round of sixteen match in Munich. But he was caught off guard not long after he took the court by surprise.

As the tennis season moves into Europe, the weather has been incredibly erratic. Untimely rains caused several disruptions at the Monte Carlo Masters last week. This week, something similar happened in Germany.

Holger Rune receives a sobering dose of reality

Holger Rune entered his opening bout of the competition with all guns blazing. He was facing Columbia’s Daniel Elahi Galan. But in that match, after just two points were scored, it began to snow. It was an unexpected occurrence that went entirely against the flow of the game.

The chair umpire entered the court to do an inspection while everyone else was outside getting their raincoats and umbrellas out. Using a walkie-talkie, he reviewed the issue with other officials and declared that play would halt when the circumstances became unplayable.

When the match was restarted, Rune gained command of the action. At 4-3 in the opening set, he is now ahead by a break. The inclement weather has compounded the problems with scheduling, which the players have previously voiced concerns about. Rune took a firm stance against the ATP last week after losing in Monte Carlo.

The Danish wonder lost to Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 Monte Carlo Masters, therefore bowing out of the competition. He then criticized the ATP on Twitter for poorly arranging his matches.

“Meaning what, @atptour..?” inquired Rune. Not that you started off with the ideal circumstances—having to play two games the day before they ended late, with nearly no time for recovery.”

Given that the weather is expected to be unkind during the whole week, it is unclear how Rune will fare in Munich. He is still among the favorites to win the competition, and he will work hard to raise the trophy in Munich.
