It was one of the more dramatic deadline day deals. With just a couple hours left with the window open, Blackburn Rovers announced that they had signed US men’s national team striker Duncan McGuire on loan from Major League Soccer side Orlando City SC. After a previous deal with Sheffield Wednesday collapsed, Blackburn came in to offer a package deal worth up to €7m on Wednesday. Orlando City accepted that offer, and McGuire was booked on a plane to fly to England to complete a medical and sign with the Championship club. But then multiple reports suggested that Blackburn had pulled out of the deal while McGuire was on his flight to England.

The sticking point has been that Blackburn struggled to pull together the resources to finance the deal agreed with Orlando. But then the Championship side sold Adam Wharton for a club record fee to Crystal Palace, and with deadline day looming, Orlando City were willing to renegotiate the initial deal. McGuire will now join Blackburn initially on loan, and the Championship side have an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer.
