South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach After placing sixth in the 5,000 meters on Saturday, senior Caroline McMartin (Pella) of Central College women’s track and field made her second consecutive appearance on the first team All-American podium.

The meet’s final races were postponed due to weather, with the women’s 5,000-meter event commencing at 10:10 p.m. local time. Twenty-first place at the halfway point of the race, McMartin steadily improved his position over the next six laps. With the second-fastest final lap in the field, she finished in 16 minutes, 58.77 seconds, moving up from 10th to sixth. She had just finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday night.

Coach Brandon Sturman remarked, “It was a rough afternoon with delays and scheduling issues.” It was difficult to determine precisely what to do when throughout the warm-up. Caroline simply had superior positioning and was able to catch more runners ahead of her, although they both finished strongly. It’s evidence of her diligence and commitment.”

With a combined total of 23 points from McMartin, Johnson, and Addison Parrott (sophomore, Danville), Central placed ninth as a team. The women’s top-10 finish in an outdoor national competition was their first since finishing second in 1984.

“They did a heck of a job carrying our team this weekend,” Sturman stated. “We want to keep climbing up the ranks and win a big trophy.”
