A statement from UCLA Athletics stated that Avery Anderson, the director of track and field and cross country at UCLA, announced his retirement from coaching on Wednesday. In the statement, Anderson said, “I love this university and I’ve been honored to lead these talented young men and women here in Westwood.” “This chapter in my life has been incredibly fortunate, but I have decided to retire from coaching. “I’ve given the track and field and cross country programs at UCLA my best, and I want to genuinely thank all of our dedicated student-athletes for their faith in me. I will always be thankful for my time spent here and will always be a Bruin.

After taking over as Director of Track and Field in 2017, Anderson, a UCLA alumni, has guided the Bruins to five Pac-12 individual titles for men and seven Pac-12 event crowns for women. In 2019, he was recognized as the men’s track and field coach of the year for the conference. In the wake of America’s battle with racial inequality in 2020, he wrote an open letter to his team that demonstrated compassion and transparency.
