“Extremely frustrating”- West Ham look to loan defender who’s failed to impress England

No matter what way you spin it, conceding 74 goals in a Premier League season is embarrassing and unacceptable. It’s baffling how a team with such a poor defensive record managed to stay fighting for Europe for the large majority of the season.

Fortunately, it seems like bringing in some new centre-backs is one of the top priorities for Tim Steidten and the rest of the recruitment team. However, what West Ham need is top quality, impressive defenders to improve on the likes of Aguerd and Zouma.

Disappointingly, the latest player they’ve been linked with isn’t exactly inspiring. Clement Lenglet was once a nailed on starter for Barcelona, but instead of getting better he went backwards. At 29-years-old he should be in his prime, instead he’s being linked with a loan to West Ham.

Spanish news outlet Sport reports that the Hammers could look to sign the Frenchman on loan, but they will have to cover his 49k-per-week wages.

After he ultimately flopped on loan to Tottenham and then to Aston Villa, it seems like a strange one from a West Ham perspective. If he was purely a back up option, it would be a good signing but anything more than that then it would be extremely frustrating – he simply isn’t good enough to be a regular starter for our Irons.
