Dortmund reportedly paid up to 10 million euros ($11 million), including bonuses, according to German media, in order to recruit the 33-year-old.
Gross, a talented midfielder with a keen eye for goal, left German club FC Ingolstadt in 2017 to join the Champions League finalists after seven years with Brighton.

In a statement, Gross—a lifelong supporter of Dortmund—said he “can’t wait to play alongside my new teammates.”

Gross was hailed by Dortmund director Lars Ricken as a “top performer” who would give the team “solidity and flexibility.”

After Brighton finished sixth in the 2022–23 season, Gross helped the team qualify for European competition for the first time in its 122-year history with 30 goals and 45 assists in 228 Premier League games.
In both his final season with the team last year and his debut season with them in 2017–18, Gross was awarded Brighton’s player of the season twice.

The thirty-two-year-old midfielder was included in manager Julian Nagelsmann’s 26-man squad for Euro 2024, having been called up to the national team for the first time.
He has one goal and eight caps for his country.
Gross was hired by Dortmund following a dismal domestic campaign in 2023–24.
Dortmund had a dismal domestic season, finishing sixth in the league and losing to Real Madrid at Wembley in the Champions League final. They also failed to advance past the German Cup’s round of sixteen.
Serhou Guirassy, a striker, and Waldemar Anton, a defender, were both signed by Dortmund this summer. They were both unexpected runners-up in the Bundesliga by Stuttgart previous season.
