There is a chance that Jamaica’s dominance in the women’s 100-meter sprint at the Olympic
Games in Paris 2024 may cease. This fact has been highlighted by the US dynamo Sha’Carri Richardson’s explosive ascension, which began with her gold-medal race at the Athletics World Championships in Budapest last year. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the legendary sprinter from Jamaica, is in her path. Fraser-Pryce, regarded as one of the best sprinters of all time, has won five world championships and two gold medals at the Olympics in the blue-riband event in track and field.
Does she still have it in her to save Jamaica’s blushes in the latter stages of her career, though, at the age of 37? Even though the “Mommy Rocket” has raced little in the lead-up to Paris 2024—something she has emphasized—it would be foolish to wager against her Olympic swan song. “Let me reiterate: this is the final Olympic Games,” Fraser-Pryce told reporters in Paris this past week. The idea that there have been five consecutive Olympic Games is absurd. The thrill of walking onto the track and always giving it my all once I step across the line is something I’m truly looking forward to.
