CHARLTON 1 SUNDERLAND 1 REPORT

The visitors’ late equalizer allowed Sunderland to secure a 1-1 draw in Barclays Women’s Championship action, but the points were shared at The Valley.

Tegan McGowan’s late goal gave the Addicks the lead in the 89th minute, but Katy Watson’s equalizer pulled the opposition even with a few minutes left.

Neither team was able to put the other goalie to the test until the 33rd minute of the match, when Freda Ayisi created the Addicks’ first real chance on goal. The winger performed admirably on the right side of the box, dribbling past two Sunderland defenders before unleashing a rocket of a shot that was stopped by the visiting team’s Claudia Moan.

Mary McAteer nearly gave Sunderland the lead shortly after that. Elizabeta Ejupi, a former Addick, crossed the field with a through pass and got behind the Charlton defense so that McAteer could grab hold of it. The striker broke through on goal, but Addicks’ excellent shot-blocker Sian Rogers was there to close her down and prevent her from taking the lead.

Charlton had another chance to go up in the closing seconds of the first half, this time via Angela Addison. From a free-kick out on the right, Carla Humphrey whipped an almost flawless cross into the box; a Sunderland defender cleared the ball as far as Addison, who fired from distance. Sadly, her attempt was stopped before it could cause the keeper any further problems.

After a mistake at the back, Addison was able to get a loose ball in behind the Sunderland defense just after the break. In the fiftyth minute, Westrup’s attempt at a clearance clipped the Charlton winger at close range and struck the bar.

Hills’ team was given a penalty three minutes later after Kayleigh Green was taken down in the box by a hack. The forward advanced from a distance of twelve yards, but Moan stopped her shot attempt.

The game was tied at seventeen minutes when the visitors were given a free kick 25 yards out from goal. Jenna Dear, the substitute, took a stand over the free-kick and swung an attempt into the top corner, but Rogers brilliantly stopped it, tipping it over the bar.

With eleven minutes remaining, Addison was replaced in the fight by Karin Muya. When Freya Godfrey squared the ball across the goal’s face, the winger was inches away from breaking the tie, but she was unable to tuck it in at close range and scuffed her shot wide.

Once again, F. Godfrey was involved and demonstrated incredible perseverance to win the ball in the middle of the park and set Tegan McGowan up for a goal. In the 89th minute, the 19-year-old grabbed hold of the ball and shot goalwards, putting the Addicks ahead with a left-footed effort.

However, Charlton’s joy was short-lived as the game was coming to an end. Due to a breakdown in communication between the defense, Katy Watson was able to tap into an empty net and tie the score after Kiera Skeels’ backpass trickled past Rogers.
