Watch Ty Simpson of Alabama have his touchdown called back after he dropped the ball on one.
Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, shown here warming up before the game against Ole Miss on September 23, made a record-breakingly stupid mistake on Saturday against Chattanooga.
Ty Simpson, the quarterback for Alabama, will always be associated with De’Sean Jackson, which is never a good thing. Simpson, who replaced starter Jalen Milroe at halftime during Saturday’s decisive victory over Chattanooga at Bryant-Denny Stadium, appeared to have broken loose for a 79-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, but a replay revealed that Simpson dropped the ball at the 1-yard line, as so many other players, including former Cal All-American Jackson, have mysteriously done over the years.
Simpson was fortunate that authorities determined that Chattanooga did not attempt to collect the ball after it rolled dead. Richard Young, the running back, scored on the next play after Alabama was awarded the ball on the 1-yard line.
After Simpson made a mental mistake, you may have expected Nick Saban to lose it on the sidelines, but the Alabama coach maintained his composure. He did not meet Simpson’s gaze, and after the official decision that the touchdown was not valid, Simpson lowered his head.
During his news conference after the game, Saban was questioned about the play. He didn’t appear surprised by Simpson’s poor decision.
“Do I really have to say anything about that?” asked Saban. “Cross the goal line and give the ball to the official,” every coach advises.
