Andy Welsh, a former player for Sunderland, Leicester City, and Blackpool, has resigned as Bury FC’s manager. The former midfielder, who was born in Manchester, played in 25 matches for Sunderland across three seasons from 2004 to 2007 while also spending two stints on loan with the Foxes. Welsh played for Blackpool, Carlisle United, and Scunthorpe before leaving the Stadium of Light for Toronto. Welsh, 40, has been fired from his position as Bury’s manager, which he has held since 2020. The club, the players, and the volunteers would like to thank Andy for his dedication and hard work over the past three and a half years, according to a statement on Bury’s website. Andy demonstrated exceptional leadership at a number of trying and upsetting occasions, not the least of which being a worldwide pandemic when it was difficult to even play football. Along with winning the league, Andy discreetly supported and helped several volunteers off the pitch when they needed it. He more than merited the opportunity to serve as the team’s captain when the season began at Gigg Lane. We cannot praise him highly enough as a person, and we are aware that many people will be very sad to see him go.
