Middlesbrough have to get back to basics to arrest Championship form slump

Michael Carrick has to try to find a productive system which suits Middlesbrough’s new players
This is Middlesbrough’s worst start to a campaign for 20 years – but it’s a bit early to start pressing the panic button.
Despite all the changes to the squad, a good nucleus of the side still exists which stormed their way to the play-offs last season.
It’s true to Boro are badly missing Chuba Akpom and Cameron Archer, which has left a huge hole in the team’s scoring power.
The recruitment policy of failing to sign a proven goalscorer as a replacement lies open to question.

But there are other players within the squad capable of getting their names on the scoresheet. Michael Carrick has to try to find a productive system which suits the new boys and find it quickly.
Whether Boro end up being good enough to challenge for a top six place remains to be seen. There are plenty of good characters in the Boro dressing room and lots of potential, so it’s reasonable to believe that things can only get better.
