This time of year is particularly pleasant in Tennessee.
This week, all 30 teams are in Nashville for the MLB Winter Meetings, an annual gathering where team staff, managers, agents representing free agents, and suppliers engage in discussions, bargain, and strive to advance their respective ball clubs.
With Alex Anthopoulos lowering expectations on Sunday morning regarding additions and/or trades, it could be a quiet period for Atlanta. The Braves are still interested in signing a left fielder and a starting pitcher, according to Anthopoulos, but only if the perfect chance arises.
To some extent, this is likely posturing to keep a competitive negotiation position, but there’s still a chance Atlanta will decide to fill the few remaining gaps (left field, fifth starter) internally and largely hold out in free agency moving ahead.
Although Anthopoulos believes the team has what it needs to be competitive—ten or eleven possible starters for the rotation and important players at every position on the roster—Braves supporters won’t like the concept of standing pat.
Brian Snitker’s media presence
Manager Brian Snitker will speak to the media, as usual during the Winter Meetings, this afternoon on Tuesday. There will undoubtedly be a lot of inquiries concerning his opinions on Atlanta’s free agency signings, his winter ball players, his projected starting left field role for Vaughn Grissom, and the openings on his coaching staff. We will inform you of his remarks.
