When Jake DeBrusk, an Alberta native and forward for the Boston Bruins, hits NHL free agency in July of next year, will the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames be interested in signing him?

In a recent one-on-one interview with Boston Hockey Now, goalie Jake DeBrusk of the Boston Bruins reiterated his wish to extend his contract with the team. Debrusk answered, “Yeah, of course,” even before the question was fully posed. I believe I was asked for the first time in the summer, but that’s what I’ve always said. I grew up here, so obviously I’ve changed and developed in different ways, but this is all I know. It’s one of those situations where I wish I could win. In ’19, we were just one game away.

All indications point to the DeBrusk camp being prepared to close a deal. However, aside from head coach Jim Montgomery praising DeBrusk recently—which is customary when contract talks involve any player—the Boston Bruins have been silent about their 27-year-old winger, who can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

However, DeBrusk’s value keeps rising in the interim. In 47 games, he now has 12 goals and 13 assists. Last Wednesday night, the Bruins lost 3-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes, ending his three-game goal streak. He has persisted in demonstrating his desire to stay a Bruin both on and off the ice. In his last 16 games, he has seven goals and seven assists. He has developed into a versatile weapon for Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery, who declared that DeBrusk’s recent play is the “best version” of the player he has seen since taking over as head coach before the 2017–18 campaign.

Then, McGuire issued a warning, outlining what might very well occur should DeBrusk go on sale in July of next year.

“However, I can assure you that an Albertan team will make him a significant contract offer if the Bruins decide not to sign him—I’m not sure if they will or won’t, but I do know that they value him,” McGuire stated. “I can assure you that he will receive the best care possible in the province of Alberta, whether it be in Edmonton or Calgary. That is, assuming Boston chooses not to sign him. This is not a deceptive ploy; it is a fact. I mean, that kind of player is needed there.
