Before the 2024 NBA All-Star Game began, Jayson Tatum told Jamal Crawford that he had met three-time league MVP, three-time champion, and Hall of Famer Larry Bird on Sunday in Indianapolis, Indiana.
When talking about their encounter, the five-time All-Star couldn’t contain his youthful enthusiasm, telling Crawford, “I met Larry Bird tonight for the first time. In my life, I have never met Larry Bird. I was excited for the game right now because I got to meet him, which just made me feel more nervous.The 2023 NBA All-Star Game MVP finished with 20 points, three assists, three rebounds, a steal, and a block in the Eastern Conference’s 211-186 victory, one year after he set a record with 55 points in the league’s premier exhibition game.
Tatum, who was still beaming after the win, talked extensively about the relationship between the current and former Boston Celtics greats.
“When I had the opportunity to go meet him and tell him how honored I was to meet him, he told me he was excited to see me. It was absurd to hear him say that. It goes without saying that he is important to the Boston Celtics, the game, and the city. It was an honor to meet him because he is the quintessential Celtic.”
In his first six years in the NBA, the native of St. Louis, Missouri, led the Celtics to four Eastern Conference Finals and was already selected for three All-NBA teams, two of which were as a member of the First Team.
