Patriots Players Gave Bill Belichick Brutal Report Card
In his last season leading the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick did not exactly win over the players. The NFLPA report card gave Belichick some terrible scores, including a B-, ranking him 27th among head coaches.
Things got worse, as reported by Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, who stated that “Only 55% of players feel that former head coach Bill Belichick was efficient with their time (31st overall).” “The players feel that Bill Belichick was rarely willing to listen to the locker room (31st overall),” according to reports in the meanwhile.
The team finished bottom in the league in two important areas affecting coach and player engagement, despite the team’s appalling overall record. This is indicative of the conclusion of the Belichick era.
The dismal grades were made public on the same day that Eliot Wolf, the director of scouting, and Jerod Mayo, Belichick’s replacement, discussed altering the mindset the coach had followed for almost 25 years.
Disconnect Between Belichick and Players Is Visible in Report Card
Any coach who has worked in the field for more than 20 years will eventually have someone criticize them of using outdated techniques. Even with nine Super Bowl trips and six Lombardi Trophies, Belichick was not immune.
Jerod Mayo Modifying Bill Belichick’s Thought Process
Mayo has been eager to openly support Belichick despite a clear shift away from the latter’s methods. According to Kyed’s colleague Andrew Callahan, Mayo told reporters, “Bill (Belichick) did a great job for a long period of time.” I don’t want you folks to interpret our changes as jabs at the previous government just because we’re changing. Saying that will change how we approach it and how it feels.
