Cowboys DE Dante Fowler was punished for his Broncos penalty

When the Cowboys signed Dante Fowler, they expected to acquire a defensive end with experience and pass-rush skills. In search of a replacement for Randy Gregory, who rejected their offer in free agency due to a clause nullifying the deal’s guarantees, Dallas sought a player who could match Gregory’s output floor at a lower cost.

Additionally, it was hoped that they would be able to get past the mental mistakes that resulted in penalties at the wrong times. Fowler showed some pass-rush ability in his first opportunity to establish himself, but he also showed the same shortcomings as Gregory, receiving an unwarranted roughness call in the defensive red zone against Denver. His night came to an end when head coach Mike McCarthy benched him for the penalty. He also received a fine from the league for it.

The Cowboys haven’t decided on their defensive end depth chart yet. Dorance Armstrong, Jr. is most likely to start on the right side, while DeMarcus Lawrence is a surefire starter on the left. Behind them, veteran Tarell Basham, rookie Sam Williams, second-year player Chauncey Golston, and Fowler are all vying for playing time. It’s possible that the two veterans are competing for a roster slot overall.
