Michail Antonio gave the Hammers their first league goal since August, and with eleven minutes remaining, Nicolò Zaniolo’s goal pulled the hosts equal.

Within three minutes of the restart, David Moyes’ team had a second “goal” disallowed. After Bowen’s corner caused havoc in the visiting team’s box, Antonio scored, but Video Assistant Referee Tony Harrington determined that the ball had struck the forward’s arm instead.

Additionally, Mavropanos believed he had assisted West Ham in winning the match six minutes into stoppage time after getting on the end of James’ pass, which infuriated the Irons late in the game Tomáš Souček ruled out Ward-Prowse’s in-swinging free-kick for handball following a five-minute VAR probe.

West Ham have a late goal disallowed against Aston Villa

The Greek stated, “We can be happier because we worked very hard and we will improve the result in the next game. At the end, we are disappointed with the result because we had two disallowed goals.”

We are unhappy because it hurts to be denied two goals, but we should be delighted that we made it to the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals and that we demonstrated character today, which we will try to continue.

“It’s a little bit [nervous], and we’re all waiting for the same decision when a VAR judgment takes so long. As things stand, they must verify all information and ensure that their choice is the correct one.

“They made the choice they think is right, but I don’t really know [about the second goal] because I didn’t see it clearly enough yet to make an opinion on it.

“We put in a lot of training, and although I thought we performed well and made some nice clearances, I think we went a little bit deeper in the second half.

“We were unable to stop their lone counterattack, and it into the net.

“We will take the positives from today and keep going.”
