SOONER THAN EXPECTED: Giants Coaching Staff Darren Waller Submits Retirement Letter Ahead Of…

Darren Waller is still thinking about retiring following the Giants’ turmoil.

The Giants need a new starting tight end if Darren Waller decides to retire from the NFL.

Waller had 52 catches for 552 yards at the end of the season.

In Week 7, he scored his only touchdown in a 14-7 victory at MetLife Stadium after catching a 15-yard ball from Tyrod Taylor.

It’s unclear if Waller will ever reach his salary cap hits of $15.4 million in 2025 and $17.4 million in 2026.

Waller stated to The Post on Friday that he is “still unsure” about whether to pursue a playing career.

The Giants were confident that Waller would return for a second season with the organization after speaking with Waller’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, earlier in the day.

It seems that may not be the case.

Waller stated, “I haven’t decided either way.”

Waller notified people in the Giants organization after the 2023 season that he was thinking about retiring, sources told The Post.

After an unsatisfactory first season in which he was hurt again and caught just one touchdown pass, the 31-year-old tight end appeared to have decided it was time to say goodbye to the NFL.

Waller’s second rap album, “Walking Miracle,” came out last year, and he may decide to pursue music as a second career.

After the season, the Giants front staff was unaware that Waller was thinking about leaving.

Based on an exchange with Waller’s agency, a Giants source verified on Friday that Waller will be a member of the team in 2024.

After learning of the report, Waller stated he was unsure of his next course of action.

This season, Waller will receive a base salary of $10.5 million and be subject to a $14 million salary cap.

The Post has learned that the Giants do not plan to make him a cap casualty.

The Giants believe he can maintain his health and contribute more significantly to the offense than he did in 2023. They want him back.

They now have to wait for Waller to make his decision about his return.

Waller used to be an explosive offensive weapon, and in March 2023, the Giants acquired him by sending the Raiders a third-round draft pick in exchange.

Waller hauled in 197 passes for 2,341 yards and 12 touchdowns in combined 2019 and 2020.

The Raiders had had enough after he missed a total of 14 games in 2021 and 2022 due to a series of hamstring problems.

Waller was unable to overcome the offensive line’s dysfunction and the quarterback turnover while playing for the Giants.

He missed five games in Week 8 due to a hamstring issue.
