News Now: Tension In Tennessee Vols Home Stadium As QB Navy Shuler Collapses Dead During Practice

A football player from Tennessee State passes away during practice.

William Wayne Jones III, a walk-on football player for Tennessee State, passed away after collapsing during a non-contact practice on Wednesday, according to coach Rod Reed.

Red-shirt freshman William Wayne Jones III had yet to play a game for the Tigers before he collapsed at a non-contact practice.

Jones, a 19-year-old rookie defensive back, was redshirting and hadn’t appeared in a game for the Tigers.

Early in the session, which started shortly after 4 p.m., he had caught a football and was returning it to defensive backs coach Ed Sanders when he went to the grass.

“We didn’t think it was anything serious, but the trainers checked on him right away,” Reed stated.

According to Reed, the trainers discovered Jones unresponsive and without a pulse and attempted to resuscitate him right away.

After calling for an ambulance, Jones was taken to Baptist Hospital. At 5:50 p.m., they declared him deceased.

According to Reed, there are no pre-existing issues that would put Jones’ health at danger.

Helmets were worn by the players, although they lacked complete gear.

It was the first drill since Saturday’s TSU game at Murray State. Due to his lack of game attire, Jones hadn’t been on the field since last Thursday. The next game for TSU is against Tennessee-Martin on November 17.

“To see him go down and stay down was a hurtful site,” said starting sophomore safety Daniel Fitzpatrick, who said he and Jones were close friends. “When a player goes down you never know. Sometimes they jump right back up and sometimes they don’t. Either way it always gets your attention.”

Athletics director Teresa Phillips said in a statement that Jones’ death had left the university in a state of mourning.
