Even though Alabama doesn’t have a quarterback competition, the position is nonetheless highly anticipated as the Crimson Tide gets ready to conclude spring training this week.
Sources from Alabama’s past two spring scrimmages claim that Jalen Milroe, a returning starter, has only practiced with the first team offense. Still, redshirt sophomore Ty Simpson has created some excitement in Bryant-Denny Stadium after two consecutive strong performances.
The final normal practice for Alabama is scheduled for Thursday. The team’s traditional A-Day game is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. CT to wrap up camp.
During the open scrimmage, fans will be able to witness the quarterbacks for the Crimson Tide for themselves. But before they do, in a Wednesday appearance, Alabama offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan gave an update on his top two passers on Tide 100.9’s “The Game with Ryan Fowler,”
Sheridan: “I think what’s been great about Jalen Milroe is that he keeps learning and developing.” He views the world as growing. As your time in college draws to a close, you might occasionally become set in your ways or believe you have things figured out.He has taken up coaching. He desires coaching. He is interested in knowing what areas and how he may develop. That’s wonderful for an older gamer like myself.
Regarding Ty Simpson, Sheridan said, “I think Ty has had a great spring, just like Jalen.” Just feel at ease playing football with Ty. As he enters his third season in college, I believe that he has grown and become more comfortable. It is evident in the way he has behaved and spoken. In the short time we’ve been here, I believe he’s already improved his operational composure and command of the offense.
“… We are quite happy with Ty. Simply said, his development and general composure and poise for a young player entering his third season. That has satisfied us, and we have observed improvement.
Sheridan has observed that Simpson and Milroe both have faith in Alabama’s new offensive system. In the course of his in a radio appearance, the offensive coordinator praised each of his quarterbacks for their recent training and talked highly of them all.
Sheridan stated, “I think you see progress every single day that we’ve had spring practice. There’s still a lot of room for growth.” It wasn’t always that way. It hasn’t always been a vertical line that goes straight up. Real progress always involves some ups and downs as well as lessons learnt. However, I believe that the group’s tenacity, eagerness to learn, and passion for football have helped them to become more confident as we’ve worked through the installation and introduced them to various tactics.

Although Milroe and Simpson will be on display for Alabama fans on Saturday, it’s still unknown how the scrimmage will function in comparison to A-Day games under Nick Saban.
Sheridan resisted giving a detailed description of what to anticipate from this year’s A-Day format in his Wednesday radio interview. He did note that it would be similar to the Tide’s prior scrimmages this spring and that the team will want to create a “competitive situation” between the offense and defense.
“We’re attempting to get as many kids as many reps as we can and place them in that setting so they can go compete and put on a big stage show,” Sheridan stated. That is the main goal we are attempting to achieve. I consider first and first and foremost, you want to emerge from a spring scrimmage healthy. “You always want to try to put the players in the best position by doing what’s best for the team and the players themselves must do well on game day,” Sheridan remarked. “I intend to be inside the box for this game, but there are some moving pieces there.”
