Andrea Iannone’s comeback is acknowledged by Ducati: “He deserves everything that is happening.”
After serving a four-year sentence stemming from a contentious doping case, Andrea Iannone is returning to the World Superbike Championship in 2024. The Team GoEleven rider has proven that he is capable of competing for the top spots and has already finished on the podium while riding a Ducati.
The CEO of the company that makes the Borgo Panigale, which the Italian raced for in the past, had high regard for The Maniac. Claudio Domenicali stated to GPOne.com that Iannone is deserving of this moment:
We are really grateful for Andrea’s return, and we think he deserves all of this as well as even more in the future. In my opinion, he was placed in a scenario that was almost contradictory given how his tale developed and the fact that an initial punishment was subsequently increased, creating confusion about how to evaluate it. He is a highly skilled rider, nevertheless, and can compete in SBK.
Iannone may make a comeback to MotoGP in the future, but is he capable of doing so? According to Domenicali, WSBK offers more opportunities for pilots within a more appropriate age range and has a greater degree of demand. He speculates that MotoGP may be a more physically demanding category for pilots between the ages of 20 and 30. Later on, it gets increasingly difficult, but still manageable, in contrast to a less taxing SBK in terms of the stresses placed on the rider. As a result, I think Iannone may have successful races and a successful second phase of his career.
Iannone left Ducati at the end of the 2017 season. In WSBK, is a comeback possible? An official from the manufacturer said, “This is absolutely possible.” However, he is getting along well with Ducati, and I believe there’s potential for them to work together in the future.
